Exercise is any bodily activity that enhances  or maintains physical fitness and  overall health and wellness.

Often referred to as aerobic,  they increase your breathing and heart rates. These activities help keep  you healthy, improve your fitness,  and help you perform the tasks you need  to do every day. Endurance exercises improve the health of your heart,  lungs, and circulatory system. They also can delay or prevent many diseases that are  common in older adults such as diabetes,  colon, heart disease and others. Such activities include  jogging, dancing, swimming,  biking, climbing up the stairs .

Strength exercises make your muscles stronger. Strong muscles help you stay  independent and make everyday activities feel easier. Some people choose to use weights to help improve  their strength. Examples of strength exercises are lifting  weights, using a resistance band,  arms curls, lifting your body weight.

Balance exercises helps prevents falls and can make  it easier to walk on uneven surfaces. Such exercises are helpful especially to older people. Some examples of balance exercises are  tai chai or exercises like standing on one leg.

Flexibility exercises stretch your muscles and can help  your body stay limber.. 

Yoga and doing various stretches can make  you more flexible

How we exercise is an important factor to consider. This will help one monitor their exercise program  Frequency: refers to the frequency of exercise undertaken  or how often you exercise.  Intensity: refers to the intensity of exercise undertaken  or how hard you exercise. Time: refers to the time you spend  exercising or how long you exercise for. Type: refers to the type of exercise undertaken  or what kind of exercise you do.

Age is irrelevant when it comes to exercising. Physical activity is important for people of all ages.

EXCUSE #1: I'm too tired to exercise. EXCUSE #2: I can't afford a gym. EXCUSE #3: I don't have time. EXCUSE #4: I need to be motivated to exercise. EXCUSE #5: I don't like to exercise alone. EXCUSE #6: I get bored easily.

FACTS AND STATISTICS ABOUT EXERCISING IN THE US 

Only one in three children are  physically active every day. Less than 5% of adults participate  in 30 minutes of physical activity each day;  only one in three adults receive  the recommended amount of physical activity each week. Only 35 – 44% of adults 75 years or  older are physically active,  and 28-34% of adults ages 65-74 are physically active. More than 80% of adults do not meet  the guidelines for both  aerobic and muscle-strengthening  activities, and more than 80% of adolescents do not do  enough aerobic physical activity to meet  the guidelines for youth. In 2013, research found adults in the following  states to be most likely to report  exercising 3 or more days a week for at least 30 minutes:  Vermont (65.3%), Hawaii (62.2%),  Montana (60.1%), Alaska (60.1%). The least likely were Delaware (46.5%),  West Virginia (47.1%) and Alabama (47.5%). The national average for regular exercise is 51.6%.

Children now spend more than seven and  a half hours a day in front of a screen (e.g.,  TV, videogames, computer).  Nationwide, 25.6% of persons with a disability reported  being physically inactive during a usual week,  compared to 12.8% of those without a disability. Only about one in five homes have  parks within a half-mile,  and about the same number have  a fitness or recreation center within that distance. Only 6 states (Illinois, Hawaii, Massachusetts,  Mississippi, New York and  Vermont) require physical education in every grade. 28.0% of Americans, or 80.2 million people,  aged six and older are physically inactive. Nearly one-third of high school students play  video or computer games for 3 or  more hours on an average school day.
