Scene 7 (5m 46s)

Sound Medium with solid fill. The romanisation of male serial killers across print and website media is made apparent via the use of language that contributes to three main discourses. Theme 1: Discourses Of Attraction e.g., “charming”, “female admirers” and “handsome” (Prachi, 2015) Theme 2: Discourses Of Sexism Media tends to focus on the appearance of male serial killers, criticising their crimes less harshly than female serial killers who are often “portrayed as an aberration of true womanhood” ( Easteal et al.) Theme 3:Discourses of Heroism Despite the severity of the crimes of serial killers such as Ted Bundy, the media uses language that suggests he is a “romantic hero” and “perfect”. Can one really be considered a hero when they have murdered innocent people? According to magazines such as Cosmopolitan, they can. Ultimately, it can be concluded that there is an “implicit positive bias toward attractive versus unattractive individuals” (Nolan and Kelly ,2020)..
