Informational  society, and a knowledge economy .   We  live in knowledge-based economies in which Science, technology and innovation (STI) have become a priority. This is so because knowledge economies require skilled workforce both at micro and macro levels.  Knowledge is viewed as an additional input to labour and capital .  Knowledge generation  requires  research R esearch is the  primary source of empirical knowledge  research  is a scientific process ;   a  process of inquiry and investigation It  is systematic and  methodical Scientific  research can be classified  as:  Basic  research (fundamental )- tests hypothesis Applied – has commercial objectives Experimental research – seeks to produce products or devices Clinical etc.

How to  manage research conducted  by  faculty  members and  staff  in schools?

Managing research involves  coordinating  and integrating the efforts of highly trained  and  autonomous  researchers. E xecute  all  research  matters, including strategic  planning, M& E   A ssess  the impact and sustainability of  the faculty’s  research activities   Identify  potential areas of research to be  nurtured with the faculty F acilitates the establishment  of research  centres  to promote greater integration and sharing of knowledge, resources, and  facilities   within faculty Ensures that proposals  submitted are of quality, research projects are progressing, and research funds are spent accountably serves as internal  quality  assessment  Faculty assess the  number of publications, number of research grants, and their  amount At faculty level  academics in  schools  to apply for grants, conduct research, and publish .

1).“Matchmaking ” by putting together experienced and young researchers in some form of mentoring  scheme 2).Faculty can  organize writing workshops and get  experienced researchers  to share and teach the skills of writing to  young researchers 3).Establish committees  to  m entor  young researchers to apply  for research grants 4).Coaching requires individuals in  senior  positions to  be good listeners and helpers, and be technically competent enough to develop new ideas . 5)Project  leading or  supervising

highly trained, able, and motivated  researchers can bring satisfactory results Three types of staff are:  1).Support  staff  2).  Technicians   3). Research  staff D evelopment  skills needed  by researchers are: proposal writing,  academic writing skills- it requires practice and continuous revision publication writing skills,  computer literacy,  post-graduate supervision,  funding application,  literature referencing,  analysis of data,  writing a research report and mentorship programmes.
