Leslie Nawirrigj X-Ray Painting Cassie Digger 18934582.
[Audio] X-ray art is a traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander style of painting, that has specific connection to Northern Australia, Arnhem Land and involves anatomical features that depicts local animals and stories. X-ray style art was developed prior to European contact with Australia and continued through the British settlement era. There are Indigenous artists who still practice x-ray style art today..
[Audio] The ancestors of the Kunwinjku Peoples painted x-ray paintings on the rocks using fine-line cross hatching, known as rarrk. This took place in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory where one of the richest and most diverse bodies of rock art is, that is thought to be at least 27 thousand years old..
[Audio] Leslie Nawirrigj has continued the tradition of his Elders, the Kunwinjku Peoples by becoming a contemporary artist who uses the traditional x-ray art style. Nawirrigj has practiced this style of art for more than 20 years and applies the rarrk technique that is also used for ceremonial painting. For rarrk, the mentioned artist makes a fine-line paint brush from the bristles inside of reed stems..
[Audio] The artist begins his work with the background and then adds the picture in the foreground. The anatomical features of the chosen animal are then added to the painting, highlighting why the style is called x-ray. The fine details are then added with the handmade paintbrush, which is the rarrk component. Although Nawirrigj continues his ancestors traditional style of painting, he uses canvas opposed to rock..
[Audio] Nawirrigj uses shape in form and typically creates artworks that include crocodiles, echidnas and kangaroos and other local, native animals. The shapes are organic and irregular, with the animals being in the foreground and the background typically being one color, giving emphasis to the shape. The anatomical features of the native animals are included and show the bone structures and internal organs of the animal. This gives the finished artwork a three-dimensional effect..
[Audio] Nawirrigj uses the fine line rarrk component to create intricate accuracy, requiring a great deal of concentration and focus and is painted free hand. The fine lines can be described as meandering, giving a natural and easy mood..
[Audio] Leslie Nawirrigj's x-ray style communicates the essence of Arnhem Land and encapsulate his knowledge of the native fauna and his tie with country. Leslie uses the color element to achieve this within his artworks to create a resemblance to country. This is achieved using tertiary colors that are duller, more natural and earthy resemblances of primary colors. The artist also selects a restricted amount of colors and utilizes them throughout the entire work..
[Audio] First Nation artist, Leslie Nawirridj continues the traditional x-ray painting style that was developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples from Northern Australia, and uses the visual art elements; shape, line and color together to complement his work..
Activities from the Australian curriculum. Including the traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art style of x-ray painting into the classroom echoes the cross-curriculum priorities set out in the Australian Curriculum. When students view, and engage in Indigenous knowledges, perspectives and values, students recognize that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is strong, diverse and respect the world’s oldest continuous living culture (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA], 2023a). Moreover, engaging in lessons that entail the Indigenous culture, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students gain a sense of belonging in the school setting and portrays their cultural background positively (Duchesne & McMaugh , p. 496). This narrative storyboard PowerPoint can be used as an introductory hook for content descriptor (AC9AVA6E02) (ACARA, 2023d). The history has been offered, as well as a renowned contemporary artist and exemplars of his intricate work. The artist’s work depicts how First Nations People embed themselves, and their ancestors in their work by making a visual statement of identity (ACARA, 2023c). Thus, after viewing the presentation, students in Year 5 or 6 will select something of significance to them and plan, draft and finalize an artwork that utilizes shape, line and color as seen in Nawirrigj’s work. The open-ended task will invite learners to devise their own response to the learning outcome ( Dinham , 2020, p. 136). That is, by choosing something that is relevant to them, they will use visual arts elements; shape, line and color to add visual appeal to the artwork. The finished product should have a single colored backdrop and the shape of something significant in the foreground with symbols inside the shape, relevant to the individual. While the task has been drawn from First Nations culture, it is personalized and relevant to the individuals interests and creativity. Year 5 content descriptor, AC9E5LY06 will be used to plan, create, edit, and publish a multimodal presentation on an Indigenous artist (ACARA, 2023b). Learners will include the same information modelled in the presentation of Indigenous x-ray artist Leslie Nawirrigj but as an informative text. That is, either as an infographic or report, learners will include the history of the art style, history of the chosen Indigenous artist and then specific information about their style of work. Learners will then write a paragraph about two to three visual arts elements used in the artist’s work and then an overview of what has been learnt, or key words and definitions in the poster. This activity will connect learners to the outer world of art and cultural practices and by researching the artist’s work, they will develop their knowledge about the world of art ( Dinham , 2020, p. 138). At the end of the lesson, learners’ will present their multimodal text to the class to consolidate their learning and through class discussion, reflect on their learning ( Dinham , 2020, p. 138). When writing about their chosen Indigenous artist and their culture in a respectful manner, the strengthening and reconciliation between First Nations Peoples and the Australian community is strengthened, highlighting the relevance (ACARA, 2023c)..
