For most of Western history, women were restricted to the domestic sphere while public life was restricted to men. In medieval Europe women were denied the right to own property, study or participate in public life. In France, they were still forced to cover their heads publicly in the 19th century, and in some parts of Germany the husband still had the right to sell his wife.

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, women could neither vote nor take part in elections. Office in Europe and most of the United States (where various areas and states granted women's suffrage long before the federal government). Women have been prevented from doing business without a male representative, be it a father, brother, husband or legal representative. Married women could not exercise control over their own children without their husbands' permission. In addition, women had little or no access to education and were excluded from most professions. Today the restrictions on women persist.

There is little evidence of early organized protests against such a circumscribed status. In the III century a. C., Roman women filled Capitoline Hill and blocked all entrances to the forum when Consul Marcus Porcius Cato resisted attempts to repeal laws restricting the use of expensive goods by women. "If you are victorious now, what will you not try? Shouted Cato. Once they start to be like you, they become your boss.  However, this rebellion was extraordinary. For most of recorded history, there were few voices against the inferior status of women, which anticipated the arguments.

The defense of women had become a literary subgenre by the late sixteenth century. When Il merito delle donne (1600; The Courage of Women), a feminist barrage by another Venetian author, Moderata Fonte, was published posthumously. Advocates of the status quo described women as superficial and inherently immoral, while aspiring feminists made long lists. of women with courage and achievement, proclaiming that women would be intellectuals who would be equal to men if they were given equal access to education. The so-called "women's debate" did not come to England until the late 16th century, when women pamphletes and polemicists joined in. After a series of satirical articles ridiculing women, the first feminist pamphleteer in England, who wrote as Jane Anger, responded with Jane Anger, Your Protection for Women (1589). This deluge of opinion lasted for more than a century until another English author, Mary Astell, published a reasoned answer in A Serious Proposal to the Ladies (1694, 1697). The two-volume work suggested that women inclined to neither marriage nor religious calling should establish secular monasteries where they could live, study, and teach
