Multiple sclerosis (MS), an inflammatory neurodegenerative disease of the brain and spinal cord, afflicting over one per thousand people in the U.S. Evidence that inflammatory markers are related to depression is accumulating. Analysis of certain cytokines may provide a promising approach to understand the role of inflammation and depression.

Scene 3

To explore the relationship of inflammation & self-report depression severity by measuring selected cytokines interleukin IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-10 in veterans with MS.

Salivary analysis for cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-10). Pearson correlation coefficients were obtained among cytokines and depression. Depression severity was measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies survey (CES-D).

Figure 1 .  Pearson correlations between Production of IL 10 & CES-D.  The CESD score is the sum of the 20 questions. A score of 16 points or more is considered depressed.  IL-10 was significantly negatively associated with depression (r = -0.47, p=.024) in persons with MS. Specifically, lower IL-10 was associated with higher depression.

Premilinary results demonstrated that measurement of IL-10 may be useful for elucidating biological mechanisms associated with the depression.  Future longitudinal work is needed in a larger sample.
