What is Corporate Social  Responsibility ?

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a company’s commitment to manage the social, environmental and economic effects of its operations responsibly and in line with public expectations. It is part of a company’s approach to  corporate governance   and often touches every part of the business—operations, human resources, manufacturing, supply chain, health and safety, and more. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is when a company operates in an ethical and sustainable way and deals with its environmental and social impacts. This means a careful consideration of human rights, the community, environment, and society in which it operates.

In 1953, Howard Bowen proposed the definition of CSR as “the obligations of business to pursue those policies, to make those decisions or to follow those lines of action which are desirable in terms of the objectives and values of our society” (Bowen, 1953).

Why should a company implement CSR? CSR matters for companies because if the community does not approve of how they do business, they may lose customers or see their reputations suffer. The news media and activist groups often watch companies closely and are quick to publicize instances of irresponsible behavior . The benefits of CSR are many. Companies establish good reputations, attract positive attention, save money through operational efficiency, minimize environmental impacts, attract top talent , increased brand awareness and recognition and inspire innovation.

Is it necessary for companies to get involved in CSR?

It’s incredibly important that your company operates in a way that demonstrates social responsibility. Although it’s not a legal requirement, it’s seen as good practice for you to take into account the social and environmental issues. Social responsibility and ethical practices are vital to your success. The 2015 Cone Communications/Ebiquity Global CSR study found that a staggering 91% of global consumers expect businesses to operate responsibly to address social and environmental issues. Furthermore, 84% say they seek out responsible products wherever possible.

Corporate Environmental Responsibility

Corporate Environmental Responsibility concerns the environmental aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It is commonly defined as is the way in which organizations can incorporate environmental issues into their operations in order to eliminate waste and emissions, maximize the efficiency and productivity of its resources and minimize practices that badly affect the country’s natural resources. It takes all its meaning in the current context (global warming, destruction of biodiversity, etc.) and becomes a pillar of development for some organizations that voluntarily engage. Corporate Environmental Responsibility is about managing the use of natural resources in the most effective and efficient manner in order to reduce environmental impacts and financial costs.

In recent years, people throughout the world have been increasinlgy concerned about saving our earth’s natural resources to make them last as long as possible. Business are big users of natural resources, so it make sense that they’d also be inerested in operating as “ green “ as possible without comprimising the vitality of their operations. Many businesses are finding that a good way to do this is by incorporating conservation principles into their mission, culture and strategic planning. Companies are trying to develop a culture that encourages all employees and other stakeholders to reserve energy, cut costs, reduce waste and enhance other environmental factors. The collective impact between business and people that work toward preserving energy and resources benefits the public while having a positive impact on businesses that contribute materially to conservation efforts. Each year, more businesses find ways to implement conservation efforts as part of their strategic, tactical and operational procedures. They gain the benefit of positive impact for their efforts.
