Scene 1 (0s)

Reducing Waste in Schools & the Impacts of Plastic on the Environment.

Scene 2 (18s)

Background Information. This powerpoint presentation titled “Reducing Waste in Schools & the Impacts of Plastic on the Environment ” is to be shown to students from grades 6-8 to teach them about how waste and plastic affects our earth and environment. This presentation also allows the students to relay this information to their school community from Kindergarten students to their own peers to help keep our environment a better place to live in for our future. Within this presentation, there will be Youtube videos, a quiz, and a google from for following up..

Scene 5 (2m 9s)

[Audio] The problem to be explored in our learning object will pertain to reducing plastic waste in schools and the impacts of plastic waste on the environment. Teachers must be aware of the global environmental concerns around waste. Plastic is used around the world, which is impacting the environment. Over the past decade, plastic waste has become a major issue on land and at sea ( Letcher, 2020). The most effective way to tackle plastic pollution is to learn how to use less from the start ( Keetly, 2019). Educating students on the impacts of waste to the ecosystem is critical. Developing ways to reduce waste in the classroom will help protect the environment. It's important to also educate the community on the impacts of waste by reminding everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle..

Scene 6 (3m 51s)

[Audio] The following are the learning objectives for the learning object we plan to develop: Users will be able to recall two effects plastic waste has on the ecosystem. Users will be able to identify two impacts that plastic and BPA have on our health. Users will be able to identify three ways to reduce plastic waste at school. Users will be able to identify two ways to maintain an eco-friendly environment at school..

Involved Learners. Target audience for our learning objective is kindergarten to grade 8 students and their teachers. The storyline of our learning object is a realistic scenario that a student may one day encounter.

Scene 13 (12m 37s)

Impact of Plastic Waste on our eco-system. Plastic often ends up in the oceans and ingested by marine life Plastic pollution has a direct and deadly impact on wildlife. Plastic that breaks down into the ocean turn into microplastics which is ingested and then travels up the food-chain. 45% of marine mammals have either ingest or are entrapped by plastic debris (Rochman et al, 2013). It’s estimated that by 2025, about 28 million metric tonnes of plastic will enter the oceans each year from poor landfills facilities in coastal countries (Letcher, 2020). 90% of all seabirds have at least some plastic in their stomach (Letcher, 2020)..

Scene 14 (13m 16s)

Impacts of Plastic waste on our health. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic compound that can be found in plastic materials and bottles and is toxic. BPA has been identified as one of the most common endocrine-disrupting compounds in polymers. BPA was documented to act as an estrogen agonist, increasing the chance of breast cancer and prostate cancer. The primary way for plastic exposure is through ingestion and inhalation (Letcher, 2020). Encouraging students to use reusable stainless steel water bottles instead of plastic water bottles reduces exposure to BPA.

Scene 16 (14m 10s)

Technology can be used to submit written work. Presentations can also be presented using technology through different learning objects. Teachers can assign more group work to students to reduce waste..

Scene 17 (14m 29s)

How a school can be eco-friednly. A teacher can facilitate an eco-club at school to promoting an eco-friendlier environment. Students can post reminders to turn off lights by each switch when no one is in the room or when natural light is shining. Teachers can set up a time and space to plant trees and engage in gardening. Students can make announcements tips and reminders on how to help protect the environment each day..

Scene 18 (15m 18s)

How a school can be eco-friednly. Setting up a water filling station to encourage re-useable bottles Teachers can encourage the parents of students to use less plastic in their child’s lunch by educating them on alternatives like stainless steel lunch boxes and items like reusable sandwich bags Setting up “litter-less lunch” days to reduce the amount of waste Eliminate individual sauce packages in cafeteria lunches. Be mindful of the amount of plastic used for decorations, plates and cups for school functions ( Keetly , 2019)..

Scene 19 (15m 42s)

Synéhesis quesfions and 1. 2. 3. Reflecfior• What are the affordances of reducing plastic use at school? How does plastic use impact the environment? What will happen if we don't actively reduce our plastic use? Users will answer the above questions with a short reflection of what they learned from the Learning object in stionnaire.
