Thanks for downloading the children's
book template! I'm so excited to help
guide you on writing your children's
book.

My name's, Brooke Van Sickle, and I've
been writing kids' books for 6 years but
always used to struggle with how to
get started until I created a template
for myself. (Something that I could
easily use for every idea.) This is the
same template I'm sharing with you!

The idea phase -- where you flesh out the book you're wanting to write.
(Including choosing a character & establishing your plot.)
 The outline phase -- where you'll actually plan out the events that happen in
your story. (This helps you connect the points in the middle.)
 The writing phase -- when you actually start writing! (Might seem odd to
start this last, but trust me, this is the best order to avoid rewriting.)

There are 3 phases you'll go through as you write a children's book:

Scene 3

Use these questions to help you brainstorm exactly what's going to happen in your
story. This will help you flesh out your idea before you move on to outlining.

Every story has a main character. List their name & everything you know about them, plus what goal they
hope to accomplish by the end of your story.

Your character can't achieve their goal on page 2. What's going to stand in the way of your character getting
their goal?

Scene 4

HOW WILL THEY TRY TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEM?

Story's work best in threes. For PBs, it's considered the rule of 3 and for Novels it's called the 3-act story
structure. List 3 ways your character will try (and fail) to overcome their problem.

Did your character get what they wanted in the end? Try to think of a twist that might be refreshing or
unexpected to the reader.

Start to plan the scenes for you story. Based on your answers from phase 1, fill in
the boxes below to plan how your story will unfold.

Now it's time to take your outline and start writing! Here are a 2 quick tips to help
get you started.

Titles are created to do 2 things: invoke curiosity & encourage a reader to pick-up the story. The title  should
help them quickly decide if your book is for them. Jot down some possible ideas to help you do that here.

All children's books, no
matter if you're writing a
picture book or novel,
should be created as one
document using Times New
Roman (or similar font) in
size 12.

Don't leave gaps between
chapters or pages. Instead,
continuously tell your story
on the same document.
