[Audio] Hello, my name is Gagandeep Kaur, and this presentation introduces my capstone research proposal examining whether motivational suggestions delivered through age-appropriate hypnotherapy and selected Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, communication techniques may support academic performance and behavioural management among school-aged children. The proposal focuses on children between approximately eight and eleven years of age and considers both academic and behavioural outcomes. The purpose is not to assume that these approaches are effective, but rather to examine them systematically..
[Audio] Academic performance is influenced by factors such as attention, motivation, self-regulation, and classroom behavior. Difficulties in these areas can affect both academic outcomes and students' overall classroom experience. The proposed study explores motivational hypnotherapy and NLP techniques as complementary approaches that may support students' attention, confidence, motivation, and behavior. These techniques are not intended to replace established educational or clinical interventions, but to explore whether they could provide additional support. There is also an evidence gap, as research on these approaches specifically with school-aged children remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether these complementary techniques can produce measurable benefits within an appropriate school setting..
[Audio] Children are continuing to develop cognitively, emotionally, socially, and behaviourally during the primary school years. Motivation, confidence, emotional regulation, and self-regulation can affect how children respond when schoolwork becomes difficult or when they encounter classroom expectations. This means that interventions designed to support learning may need to consider more than academic instruction alone..
[Audio] This problem matters because children's educational experiences are influenced by multiple developmental factors. A child may understand academic material but still struggle because of low confidence, limited persistence, frustration, or behavioural challenges. The proposed research examines academic performance and behavioural management together..
[Audio] Motivational hypnotherapy combines relaxation, focused attention, imagery, and positive suggestion to support motivation and engagement with personal goals. NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, focuses on communication, goal setting, and ways of approaching experiences and challenges. Techniques such as reframing can help children consider different perspectives and develop constructive responses. An important part of the rationale for introducing these skills at an early stage is that children have the opportunity to develop positive coping strategies and make them part of their everyday toolkit. The hope is that these skills can be useful not only in the classroom, but also as children encounter challenges later in their academic, professional, and personal lives. So, the study is interested in whether these approaches can be appropriately adapted to support attention, motivation, confidence, and self-regulation, while helping children build skills that may remain useful as they grow..
[Audio] There is a reasonable research foundation for examining hypnotherapy with children, but that evidence needs to be interpreted carefully. The important limitation is that most studies examined health and clinical outcomes. Academic achievement and everyday classroom behaviour are different outcomes, so clinical evidence cannot automatically be assumed to apply to schools..
[Audio] Nadeem and colleagues provide one of the most directly relevant studies for this proposal. Their research examined motivational instructions in an educational context. However, improvement occurred in both hypnotic and simple-instruction conditions, so it would be inappropriate to conclude that hypnosis itself caused the improvement. The age and contextual differences also support additional research..
[Audio] The evidence concerning NLP needs to be presented cautiously. Zhang and colleagues reported positive educational outcomes, but these findings do not establish effectiveness for younger children or classroom behaviour. Witkowski's review identified methodological weaknesses. The proposal therefore evaluates selected communication techniques cautiously rather than treating NLP as an established mechanism..
Academic Performance: Attention, Confidence & Motivation.
Behavioral Management & Self-Regulation. Behavioral management.
[Audio] This research gap provides the main justification for the proposed study. We have evidence from clinical hypnotherapy, preliminary evidence for motivational instructions, and mixed educational NLP evidence. What is missing is a careful examination with younger school-aged children while measuring both academic and behavioural outcomes..
[Audio] The intervention would involve approximately 60 children aged eight to eleven from two existing classrooms. Because the classrooms already exist, students would not be randomly assigned individually. The intervention would consist of eight sessions over four weeks, using relaxation, guided imagery, motivational suggestions, positive communication, future-oriented goal statements, and constructive self-talk. The comparison classroom would continue regular instruction..
[Audio] Academic performance would be assessed using curriculum-based English and Mathematics measures. Behavioural functioning would be assessed using the teacher version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and its Impact Supplement. The data would be analyzed using SPSS, with the primary analysis examining whether change differs between intervention and comparison groups..
[Audio] The value of this research does not depend on obtaining a positive result. If meaningful improvements are found, the findings could justify larger studies. If no meaningful benefits are found, the results could help prevent adoption without sufficient evidence. The proposed intervention is a potential complementary strategy, not a replacement for established supports..
[Audio] Ethical responsibility is particularly important when research involves children. Participation would require parental or guardian consent and child assent, with voluntary participation and confidentiality. The study also has limitations including its small sample, one-school setting, intact classrooms, lack of individual random assignment, and inability to identify which intervention component produces an effect..
[Audio] In conclusion, the proposed research responds to a specific gap in the literature. There is evidence that pediatric hypnotherapy can support several psychological and health-related outcomes, and preliminary evidence that motivational instructions may influence academic achievement. NLP research is mixed and methodological concerns remain. Further research is justified, but the intervention should not be assumed effective. The proposed study takes a cautious, measurable approach..
