[Audio] So what is master patient index?
It's a huge database that stores patient information and links patient records across multiple healthcare systems
A patient is assigned a M-R-N (medical record number) which will identify them in the system
M-R-N stays the same each time a patients visits the facility.

The main goal of this program is to consolidate and update patients records across different healthcare systems  This helps guarantee the correct information is always received by the right person at the right time  MPI’s serve as the foundation for the best practice approach For the continuity of care- offers even level sharing of patient information between providers when necessary Helps reduce medication errors as patients are accurately identified with their unique identifiers MPI helps follow healthcare regulations and standards Benefits pace of care – can help speed in check in or admission processes

Data Collection and Integration – patient information is collected and stored through channels to make a holistic patient’s profile Identifier Assignment and Linkage – MPI assigns a unique identifier to every patient which helps eliminate the mixing up of two patients with same name and demographics Matching Engine – algorithms are used to connect patient records with different parameters Handling Data Inconsistencies and Errors – data quality checks and validation processes Data cleansing – ensures the reliability of the MPI to identify and rectify errors Electronic Health Records (EHR) Paper records to EHR EHR integration – updates in real time to keep up to date records Interoperability and Information Exchange – the sharing and exchanging of information for medical providers to make decisions for their patients
