Iasi was the capital of Moldavia between 1564-1859, one of the two capitals of the United Principalities between 1859 and 1862 and the capital of the Kingdom of Romania between 1916 and 1918 (during the First World War, when Bucharest was under German occupation).
The city of Iasi was first mentioned in a commercial privilege (granted to merchants from Lviv), issued in 1408 by the ruler of Moldavia Alexander the Good. Because there were older buildings this time (for example the alleged Armenian Church built in 1395), it is believed that the city is much older, at least a few decades before this date, as evidenced by the walls of the Royal Court.

The city was set on fire several times by Tartars in 1513, Ottomans in 1538, Cossacks in 1650 and Poles in 1686. One of the most dramatic moments for the city was the destruction of 1650, when Cossacks and Tartars attacked Moldova. , responding to Vasile Lupu’s refusal to marry his daughter to Timus Khmelnytsky. Miron Costin tells us that „the whole city burned down then”, the courtyard being abandoned by the Dărăbanii (foot soldiers) left by the lord for guard. The only rescue of the inhabitants were Codrii Iașilor, nearby
The climate has a pronounced continental character, being influenced by air masses from the east. In summer, dry weather with high temperatures predominates, and in winter the effect of air masses coming from the north and northeast is fully felt, the region being frequently haunted by blizzards. Droughts, late spring and early autumn frosts, rain showers accompanied by hail, complete the features of the specific continental climate regime.
In the city, on the hill of Copoului, there is the oldest university in Romania, the University of Iași, currently called „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University. Founded in 1860 by decree by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, successor of the old Mihaileni Academy, the university today has 15 faculties, with over 40,000 students. The main building, an architectural monument, was erected in 1896.
Iasi is also an important regional shopping center, here there are many shopping centers (Palas Mall, Era Shopping Park, Iulius Mall, Felicia Shopping Center, MCM Center, etc.) and several hyper and supermarkets (Carrefour, Kaufland, Auchan, Metro, Selgros, Lidl, Dedeman, Mathaus, Brico Depot, Leroy Merlin, Mobexpert). Other projects are underway (Palas Campus, Moldova Mall, Silk District, etc.).
