Scene 1

According to the Australia Curriculum (ACARA, 2018 V.8.4 ) English is important to the learning and development of all young Australians, as: It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse , understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them (ACARA,2018 V 8.4). English is a learning area and subject that is taught in the Australian Curriculum. The teaching of English involves teaching the three strands as outlined in the Australian Curriculum language, literature and literacy (ACARA,2018 V.8.4).

Definition and description of English as curriculum area

Literacy is not "taught", but skills acquired through the content of learning areas for example English. L iteracy skills are reinforced throughout the Australian Curriculum and serve as the foundation on which the learning is built (ACARA,2018V.8.4 ). “ Literacy is the capacity, confidence and disposition to use language in all its forms. It incorporates a range of modes of communication including music, movement, dance, storytelling, visual arts, media and drama, as well as talking, listening, viewing, reading and writing” (DEEWR, 2009, p. 38)..

An example of how English can be taught in Early Primary might be a shared reading lesson .This relates to the Language learning area in the Australian Curriculum (ACARA, 2018, V.8.4 ).The lesson is designed for Primary students (5-year old's ) and links to ACELA1439 - Recognise and generate rhyming words, alliteration patterns, syllables and sounds (phonemes) in spoken word . Using the book Sharing Fruit, (Jenny Feely) First , the teacher will let the children know that this book she will read has lots of rhyming words. The teacher will give children a quick explanation of rhyming words. Then the teacher will read the book and ask the students every time they hear any rhyming words to clap their hands. The teacher will then write them down and explain to the students why the words rhyme, and explain that certain words have the same ending..

An example of how Literacy can be taught in Early primary might be a modelled reading lesson and acting out the story with the children.This relates to the Foundation students 5 year olds and links to the content descriptor ACELY1784 - Use interaction skills including listening while others speak, using appropriate voice levels, articulation and body language, gestures and eye contact( ACARA, 2018, v.8.4 ) Using the book “Goldilocks and the three Bears (Gerald Muller ) First the teacher could read the story to the students .Then the teacher could ask questions about the Story to check the children's understanding of the text. For example who were the characters, and what did Goldilocks do inside the Bears house? And children take turns answering the questions. So they can practice listening to others and contributing to ideas. Following that, students in groups try to act out the story for example, three students can play the role of the bears, and one can play the role of Goldilocks( State government ,2019)..
