Minerals are naturally occurring substances found deep inside the earth. They play an important role in our lives. Many of the things we use daily are made of minerals. Starting from the toothpaste we use every morning to the metal cookware used to prepare our meals to the metal hooks, buttons or zippers on our clothes – all these are made of minerals. Minerals are mainly of two kinds – metallic and non-metallic.

India is endowed with a rich variety of mineral resources due to its varied geological structure. The mineral resources provide the country with the necessary base for industrial development. India's major mineral resources include Coal (4th largest reserve in the world), Iron ore, Manganese ore (7th largest reserve in the world),Mica,  Bauxite , Chromite,   Diamonds, Limestone and Thorium. India's oil reserves, found in Bombay High off the coast of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and in eastern Assam meet 25% of the country's demand. [

Gold is a precious metal that is extremely rare and expensive. Ornaments are made of it. The Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka are famous for their gold reserves.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed mostly of the mineral calcite and comprising about 15% of the Earth’s sedimentary crust. Almost all the states of India produce some quantity of limestone. Over three-fourths of the total limestone of India is produced by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu.
