Introduction:. There are two types of articles. Articles definite indefinite (the) (a or an).

Definite articles (The): When we refer to particular person, thing or place. At that time we use the Article “The”..

Rules for Article “the”: When we refer to a particular person or thing already referred to before: Example: 1.  The  book you want is out of stock.                  2. Let us go to  the  swimming pool where you go everyday. 2. When a singular noun represents the whole class: Example: The lion, The poor, The rose, The blind.

3. When we refer to names of rivers, seas, oceans, gulfs, mountain ranges and group of islands and provinces. Example: The Arabian sea, The Indian ocean, The Yamuna, The deccan, etc..

4. You will note that the article “the” is not used before the names of countries. However, the articles “the” is used before the names of geographical phenomena. Examples: 1. The clouds swirl down to touch the Himalayas.                    2. The Ganga drains roughly a fourth of the country. 5. With common nouns of unique things: Examples: The sun, The sky, The earth, The times of India, The Mumbai Samachar. 6. With superlatives: Examples: The best, The darkest,  The easiest.

Articles “The” should not be used: Before a Noun in its widest sense: Examples: 1.  Man  is mortal.                    2. What kind of  animal  is it? 2. Before names of materials:  Examples: 1. Gold is a precious metal.                    2. Cotton grows in India.

3. Before proper nouns: Examples: 1. Mumbai is a big city. 2. My name is Kamlesh. Exception: when proper noun is used as a common noun: 1. Kalidas is the shake spear of India. 2. He is the Sachin of our team..

4. Before abstract nouns: Examples: 1.  Honesty  is the best policy.                    2. It is essential to  success  in life. 5. Before uncountable: Example: Beauty, love, Joy etc Exception: But when the meaning of the abstract is restricted  tp  a particular thing  or person, the article “the” is used: The wisdom of Birbal. The beauty of  Noorjahan .

Indefinite Articles (A or An):  Rules for indefinite Articles: Generally, an indefinite articles is used before a common noun, singular number: The choice between ‘a’ and ‘an’ is determined by sound. The indefinite article ‘an’ is used before a singular common noun beginning with a vowel (a,  i , e, o, u ) sound. Examples: an ass, an owl, an egg, an orange, an umbrella, etc. Exception: an hour, an honest man, an hotel, (‘h’ is silent) an M.P, an M.L.A

4. The indefinite article ‘a’ is used before a singular common noun beginning with a consonant sound. Examples: a body, a goat, a lion, a dog etc.
