Small sample size (n = 11) All participants from one nursing school and have previous education and/or careers that may influence background knowledge The evaluation tool was developed for purpose of this quality improvement project and cannot be considered valid or reliable

Antibiotics improved morbidity and mortality rates of bacterial infections but widespread use of antibiotics has lead to antibiotic resistance Antibiotic resistant infections are a global growing issue with over 2.8 million diagnosed and over 35,000 fatalities in the United States each year. Antibiotic stewardship programs aim to refine the use of antibiotics and consist of prescribers and pharmacists to form an multi-disciplinary team. Nurses are underutilized in antibiotic stewardship due to lack of education despite optimal positioning to make an impact and encouragement to practice within the full scope of their education. Education hours spent directly correlates to nurses’ confidence in applying concepts.

To increase nursing students’ understanding of and their role in antibiotic stewardship through education. To improve nursing students’ perceived preparedness to participate in antibiotic stewardship through education.

Type of Project : quality improvement pre- and post-test design Population of Interest : senior (Cohort 5) and junior (Cohort 6) nursing students the Phillips School of Nursing Intervention : educational interactive presentation with voice-over and a video Evaluation : mixed method pre- and post-test survey consisting of Likert scale and free-response questions

Specific, targeted, and comprehensive education is essential for increasing pre-licensure nurse confidence in and preparedness to engage in antimicrobial stewardship. It is critical that this education is threaded throughout baccalaureate education as well as in a distinct module that is followed up with assessment. It may be important that this education is both connected to and distinct from infection prevention and control Further research and implementation of this education could reveal a need for further education post-licensure.

9 questions were repeated on both the pre- and post-test and were able to be compared using a two-tail t-test resulting in: t(10) = 2.228, p = 0.003  No statistical significance between pre and post-test for Cohort 5: t(5) = 2.571, p = 0.067 Pre and post-test survey results for Cohort 6: t(4) = 2.776, p = 0.018 No statistical significance between Cohort 5 & Cohort 6 when the pre- and post-tests were compared
