Scene 7 (1m 42s)

Victor's Story. Victor is a 3 rd -grade boy living in Shenzhen, China. Due to his dyslexia, he struggled with academic learning at school. Since Victor was often teased at school, he was sensitive to negative feedback from others. One day, he had a meltdown since a caregiver marked an "X" (X stands for mistakes in Asia) on his wrong answer in his workbook. He cried and tore apart his workbook. Victor's mother then turned to Ming-Ling for help..

Scene 8 (2m 7s)

Victor's Story. To help Victor better express and regulate his emotions, Ming-Ling created the story of the Circle (○), Cross ( X), and Check (✓) , which aimed to change Victor’s perception of the “X” symbol. This inspired him on how each character, the circle, the cross, and the check, can have their own unique contributions, just like every individual has their own value and strengths..

Scene 9 (2m 29s)

Victor's Story. Colourful mountain fields. Victor liked this story a lot and even continued to expand on the plot for the story. Victor is also talented in drawing. However, he gave up on drawing since art was seen as less important than academic learning at school. Ming-Ling decided to encourage Victor to draw again. She embedded this goal in one class and she asked Victor to draw a logo for Ji Feng Cao, AITEC’s exclusive authorized agency in China..

Scene 10 (2m 53s)

Victor's Story. Many logos proposed by professional graphic designers had been rejected due to their similarity, but the logo designed by Victor turned out to be approved. Victor was triumphant in his design and showed that he should not be underestimated. Victor received a royalty payment for his design, as a recognition of his contribution and as an encouragement..

Scene 14 (3m 54s)

Bang's Story. Bang is a very typical AS 8-year-old boy living in Shanghai, Chin a Challenges: 1 pragmatics 2 tires easily while completing handwriting homework 3 hypersensitivity to noises and touch 4 trouble with jumping with two feet together 5 a mild articulation issue in fronting ( d,t ) substitute backing ( g,k ). . As a neurodivergent child, Bang show s many s tr engths and talents in these areas including: Science and Engineering (specifically machines and instruction manuals) Creative thinking Enthusiastic self-learner.

Scene 15 (4m 17s)

. Bang is good at designing and assembling circuit boards, and building machines . He is a strong problem-solver and thinker when encountering challenges..

Scene 16 (4m 28s)

Despite the weakness of Bang's handwriting, AITEC allowed him to do his after-class exercises via making PPTs. Subsequently, he continues to self-learn its features and his brilliant thoughts come through. He can convey his ideas and deep thinking more easily through his Powerpoint slides..

Scene 17 (4m 48s)

Bang typed down a summary of a story in a slide. We were impressed with the richness and depth of his expression..

Scene 18 (5m 3s)

Bang create d a chart to summarize the emotions experienced by different characters at different times in a story called "the old musician" ..

Scene 19 (5m 28s)

After reading AITEC's Social-Emotional story " The Circle, Cross, and Check", Bang came out with his own definition to compare the three symbols. Taking one example, "A Cross symbolizes a mistake, or something that is incorrect or unequal. The symbol is formed by placing the two lines on top of each other. A cross is just a plus sign titled at 45 degrees.".

Scene 20 (5m 51s)

Logo Description automatically generated. Another example of Bang's creative thinking: In an exercise, he was asked to draw two 13-story building s and surroundings. Rather than actually drawing 13 stories like most other children do (see the first pic ture ) , he simply drew a box and wrote “A*13 (see Bang's photo underneath ) .”.

Scene 21 (6m 13s)

To Conclude Bang's Story. Bang’s story is inspiring for people working with neurodivergent children. His story shows us that, using an approach that truly taps into his strengths, his true potential is then able to flourish. We are able to see and appreciate his unique mind. On the contrary, if Bang is asked to keep up with the standard rigid expectations and traditional test formats, like handwriting, his true potential would not be seen..

Scene 22 (6m 37s)

Josh's Story. Josh is currently a 14-year-old boy of Chinese descent from Singapore, and was diagnosed with ASD at a young age. The primary language in Josh's home and school environment is English. Prior to his lessons with Ming-Ling, Josh only knew a little Chinese vocabulary ..

Scene 23 (6m 54s)

Josh's Story. Since Josh has ASD, his mother did not believe he could learn Chinese, a second language to him due to this language impairment. Difficulty with 5W questions Responding to questions by repeating the initial question (Echolalia) Does not know how to use pronouns Low reading comprehension (semantics) Repetitive body movements Little eye contact Social connection issues However, when Josh’s mother consulted Ming-Ling about Josh’s ability in learning Chinese, Ming-Ling was confident that Josh had potential right away..

Scene 24 (7m 18s)

Josh's Story. Josh started learning Chinese with Ming-Ling in January 2021 through Zoom. In just three months, his Chinese pronunciation became highly accurate; and his vocabulary increased exponentially. Josh was making requests to his mom: "he wants to transfer to a school like his brother where students need to take Mandarin courses" Josh could handle a highly concentrated amount of learning content in each class and he eventually gained many logical linguistic concepts between Chinese and English..

Scene 27 (8m 11s)

Now Josh can type in Chinese! He and the teacher had a conversation through typing in this online lesson..

Scene 28 (8m 25s)

Josh's Story. To date, Josh has accumulated more than 500 Chinese vocabulary words, and is able to have simple daily conversations with his family in Chinese. He can express himself in Chinese sentences in daily life contexts (e.g., “I can take care of grandpa;” “I go jogging with grandpa in the park.”) He can also type in Chinese, and can correct himself when he sees mistakes. Josh has excellent retention. Josh did all the learning and exercises in his weekly Chinese lessons. Ming-Ling did not ask him to do additional assignments out of the class. He has made such great progress and fully demonstrated his ability to learn a new language..

Scene 29 (8m 57s)

Inspiration. . These stories illustrate why it is important not to underestimate our neurodivergent learners. AITEC strives to build a community of like-minded and forward-thinking student-centered educators Through a positive and flexible environment these learners shine..
