[Audio] We will discuss critiques that modern scholars have of Theopanes and his sources. Theopanes was a Byzantine historian who lived in the sixth century and his work is widely read and studied. However there are several critiques that scholars have of his work. One critique is that Theopanes often relies too heavily on earlier sources which can lead to inaccuracies and a lack of critical thinking. Additionally Theopanes' work is often unbalanced by his failure to utilize accounts and information outside of the Byzantine world which can lead to a misplacement of both time and geography in his reconstruction. Another critique is that Theopanes has a strong theological bias which can affect his interpretation of events. This bias can lead to a religious lens through which he views history which can be limiting and inaccurate. Modern scholars have also critiqued Theopanes' treatment of iconoclast emperors and his praise of orthodoxy. Furthermore they have scathingly dismissed the rise of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Sources for this information include The Chronicle of Theophanes Confessor (1997) translated and edited by Cyril Mango and Roger Scott as well as J Howard-Johnston's book Witnesses to a World Crisis: Historians and Histories of the Middle East in the Seventh Century chapter 9 “Later Historians: Theophanes” pages 268-312..
