When does the initial stage of assessment planning take  place? During lesson planning. What could happen if a lesson is  not well planned to cater  to all the learners unique needs? It is unlikely that the lesson plan will address  learner's cognitive levels as stipulated  in Blooms Taxonomy. Why is it important to have  adequate knowledge of the CAPS  content? To know how you should involve , engage, listen and observe  learners during teaching and learning when planning  an assessment. What do you need to bear in mind? The intended outcomes you want  your learners to achieve when planning an assessment. Why is it important to assess  a learners prior knowledge during teaching and  learning? To find the level of understanding before the actual assessment Why should a teacher be  involved in how the learning is taking place? In order to identify the areas that require  improvement before assessment takes place

ASSESSMENT IN EDUCATION IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT 

Whith what document was  the National Curriculum statement policy replaced  (NCS)? Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS 2011) Foundation phase (1-3) Mother tongue/home language is  used during teaching and  learning as well as when conducting  assessment across the CAPS subjects. Except for First additional language (English) Intermediate, senior and further educational phase English/Afrikaans is used during teaching and learning  as well as assessment across the CAPS subjects with the exception of the specific home language.

What is an assessment?  A process of gaining information about the learner's learning and  providing constructive feedback. Assessment can also be regarded as?  The process if making a judgement about a learner's performance on a task or  activity. Purposes of assessment Diagnosing strengths and weaknesses Judging performance Providing feedback Placing/Grading of learners Teachers planning purposes

Internal assessment Evaluates what students do when they are in class. Illustrates aspects of a student's progress that are  not typically not evaluated in an external assessment. Serves as a basis for professional development. 

External assessment Assessment developed and  used by an examination body or  agency other than the learner's school. Often standardized test.  Often serves to grade candidates for further educational opportunities and  or certification purposes

Informal assessment Daily progress monitoring. In the form of: Written exercise. Oral activities/Presentations Written tests Reading aloud. Used to provide constructive feedback. To help future planning.  * Any assessment forms part of the continuous assessment;  should be controlled and recorded if possible.  

Formal assessment Take form of a formal programme of assessment. During the course of the year. Should be marked and formally recorded  by the teacher  for progression and  certification purposes.

Focuses on Individual learning abilities and  individual feedback can be given. A teacher should not be quick to judge learners based  on performance but give learners enough time to find  meaning in what has been taught through nurturing  individual talents. Formative assessment = Assessment for learning.

Is comprehensive in nature  Used to check the level of achievement at the end of a teaching and  learning programme Based in a cumulative learning experience  Examples Tests Exams Lab projects When planning a summative assessment,  you should answer the following questions What is the learning objective/outcome What should the learner be  able to do after the learning

HOW DO LEARNERS LEARN, PROGRESS AND  ULTIMATELY ACHIEVE? 

The learner centered approach is  used during teaching and learning. When assessing learners using  either formally or informally the Blooms Taxonomy levels of questioning should be  taken into consideration.

BANTA INDICATED THAT ASSESSMENT COMPRISES  OF THE FOLLOWING: 

A systematic collection,  review, and use of information about educational programmes undertaken  for the purpose of improving  learning and development. It can also be regarded as the process of gathering and  discussing information from multiple and  diverse sources in order to develop  a deep understanding of what learners know , understand, and can do  with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences;  the process culminates when assessment results are  used to improve subsequent learning (Angelo & Cross, 1993). An assessment can be viewed  as the process of gathering and  interpreting evidenceto make  judgements regarding student learning (Dreyer, 2014).

It is also considered as the crucial link between learning outcomes,  content and teaching, and learning activities. An assessment is used by learners and  their teachers to decide where the learners are  at in their learning process, where they need to go,  and how best to get there(Hattie, 2011). The purpose of an assessment is  to improve learning, inform  teaching, help students achieve  the highest standards they can , and provide meaningful reports on students' achievement (NSW DET, 2003).
