Definition of airway obstruction: • Anything blocks the airway, then the person cannot get enough oxygen, and life is threatened. • Partial or complete blockage of the breathing passage to the lung and may be present in the conscious or the unconscious victim..

Causes may lead to airway obstruction: 1. Foreign bodies aspiration (food – coins –small toys) 2. Aspirate blood , vomitus, mucus 3. The tongue blocks the pharynx 4. A severe allergic reaction (Anaphylactic reaction) 5. Fire or burns from breathing in smoke 6. Traumatic injury and trauma to the airway (mouth injury). 7. Bronchoconstriction or bronchospasm ( severe asthma ). 8. Relaxation of the airway muscles due to unconsciousness.

Signs and symptoms of airway obstruction: The symptoms and signs of obstruction will depend on the cause and severity of the condition. Airway obstruction may be gradual or sudden in onset and may lead to complete obstruction within a few seconds..

The signs and symptoms of airway obstruction: Partial airway obstruction • Panic, Anxiety, Agitation • High pitched or wheezing sounds when breathing in (Gasping sounds) • Coughing • Clutching at the throat with one or both hands.(universal sign of chocking) Complete airway Obstruction • May be conscious or unconscious. • Unable to breathe • Unable to speak • Unable to cough • Face may appear bluish.

Chocking • A foreign object that is stuck in throat may block it and cause laryngeal spasm. • If blockage of airway is mild, the casualty is able to clear it by coughing. • If it is severe, the victim will be unable to speak, cough, or breathe and will eventually lose consciousness. • Clutching at the throat with one or both hands.(universal sign of chocking).
