Loudness is determined by the amplitude of sound. Large amplitude=Louder sound Smaller amplitude=Softer sound The vibration of the source sets the amplitude of the wave. Energy is transmitted into a medium through the vibrations. More energy=Larger amplitude Molecules move back and forth vigorously.

Loudness is also determined by sensitivity of the ear. The human ear is only sensitive to some frequencies. The volume received depends on the amplitude of the sound wave and its frequency of the wave.
